Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an amazing woman. She wrote the amazing book Frankenstein, which is one of my favourite books of alltime. Don’t be fooled by the schlock horror movie interpretations, this is a searing examination of the rights of men, especially given the backdrop of the Industrial revolution. Her socialist father had long advocated for the rights of workers, and she was heavily influenced by this. A fascinating woman.
Such a background naturally led her to women’s rights, especially as a single mother after her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley died. Which leads me to this essay/novel : A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
Feminism isn’t about female superiority, though it has been twisted often by all sides to mean this. It is about being equal and different, about having equal choices and opportunities, equal pay for the same job, the chance for the same job!
It doesnt matter to me whether my daughters choose employment or motherhood, or even a combination of both, as career/vocation, as long as they have the choice.
