Tell me what you want…

August 4th, 2008 by timelady

…what you really, really want.

That should be so simple, right? Right? Come on, clock is ticking…tick, tock…

It isn’t, you see. One wish to get what you yearn for. Only one! So many things, so many quick, superficial answers.

Let us make it loaded. You can have your wish, but you have to be willing to sacrifice five years of your life span for it. Now, it has some value, a price to be paid always raises the worth of something.

Now, tell me, what do you want? What does your heart call for? Money, fame, love, health? A better job, bigger house, popularity?

Or are you altruistic, well, then, world peace is the standard answer for that. (Caveat on that one, no guarantee of maintenance. You break it, you keep it).

Now, is that dream something recent, changing as you grow and mature? Or is it the thing that pulls your heart strings? What do you dream of, in your deepest heart, in the depths of night, when you cannot sleep?

Now.

Review it, are you finding it unachievable (no flying to the moon on gossamer wings, people, I canna change the laws of physics)? If impossible, start a new dream Unlikely is fine, that we can work with. The impossible is hard, miracles, well, they take longer. Let us go with unlikely, no matter how unlikely, how constrained your circumstances are, let us go with it.

Now.

What are you going to do about it? If it is worth you gambling five years of your life for, then your life is to precious to waste not at least TRYING. Whether you succeed or not, the failure is not trying.

Try.

Thanks for making me think! I realise now that I have everything I need. Ain’t that good? :D

Wisdom sufficient to understand and overcome the dilemmas inherent in being offered such a wish (particularly the altruistic ones). At the very least, it should grand one a guiding light to overcome the mentioned problems without the need for wishes.

Or put more simply, the wisdom to deal with these things.

I would gladly sacrifice 5 years of my life to ensure that the rest of it is healthy. Trust me, being ill and in pain reduces enough quality of life to more than compensate.

Much as I’d welcome a return of good health and freedom from pain, I wouldn’t give up five years of my life for it.

In fact, the only thing I can think of that would persuade me to surrender my life (in part or whole) is if that would somehow save the life of one of my loved ones.

Otherwise, life is too dear to me to give any of it up for a change in my circumstances.

I have a few goals in life. I think of them as “Things to do before I die”.

I want to get married to the woman I love.
I want to live with her.
Which means getting to live in the US.
    Which means getting a visa.
Which means paying off my debts.
Which means finding a well-paid job [DONE! Check that one off the list! Whoo!]
The above is my main task at the moment, as it is at the top of my list of things to do before I die.

I also want to write a huge multiplayer game. That’s something I do on the weekends, when I can, since I cannot always work at reducing my debts.

I also want to destroy copyright, or at least make a large dent in it, by creating a new means for artists to get paid for their work without having to become eternal parasites. I have plans for this, but it is a low priority in the list.

I also want to save lives. Again, I have plans to do this on a large scale, but it is bottom of my list of things to do before I die. I would like to save at least one life before I die though: it would feel balanced.
