    Bruce Schneier has some ideas on the interplay between personal information and the internet. In particular, he sees value in not disclosing personal information in some circumstances.

    Here’s an extract from a blog entry where he gives some opinions on safe personal computing. The blog entry is at http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2004/12/safe_personal_c.html

    “[...] Think before you do business with a Web site. Limit the financial and personal data you send to Web sites–don’t give out information unless you see a value to you. If you don’t want to give out personal information, lie. Opt out of marketing notices. If the Web site gives you the option of not storing your information for later use, take it. Use a credit card for online purchases, not a debit card. [...]”

    So… how do you manage the trade-off between the risks of anonymity in some situations versus the benefits of anonymity in others?

    This from someone who posts anonymously (your email is not you, you hide your identity, qed, anonymous).

    Using a nick does not actually provide you with an identity.

    I post effectively anonymously as I don’t believe that revealing my identity to you would be of any benefit to me.

    I note that you still attack me personally instead of responding to the ideas that I present.
