Let me explain…

December 13th, 2007 by timelady

…no, there is too much. Let me sum up.

Hey people, its my morning summary blog.

The solar system is dented. I always thought it was bent.

Digital survey of the Milky Way, for your wonderment. What, I wonder, do you need of god(s) when the reality is so much more marvellous?

NOT the infamous Katy Manning and Dalek picture (NSFW!) - but here is a much safer Kylie MInogue and Dalek friend :)
Linux gifts for Xmas - some fine ideas from New Linux User. Add some of your own to her list!

Word of the year is W00t. Ummm - w00t!

Look, I know I have probably linked to it before through bookmarks, but it is Christmas. Give of your time. Learn new words, show off the ones you know. For every word you get right, ten grains of rice feeds someone hungry. Dammit people, it takes so little effort to help, how much more simpler can it be? You don’t even have to move your butts!

If we die…

…it will be for GLORY, not gold.

Look, I will make this as simple as possible. Go see Beowulf.

See it in 3D. Trust me. It is a thing of magic in an often bleak world.

Of course, I just had a fantastic night seeing it, so I amy be biased;)

Time makes…

October 24th, 2007 by timelady

…more converts than reason.

My favourite show on tv (and one enjoyed by the kidlets too), is Time Team, an archeological show with a twist. One of my favourites of all time. So much so, that if I was offered my pick of dvds, I would choose the back catalogue of this.

Actually, the whole Tony Robinson back catalogue - Worst Jobs in History, Blackadder (all of them), Britain’s Real Monarch, even the kids shows Tales from Fat Tulip and Maid Marion and her Merry Men (which also starred Danny John-Jules, famous for being the Cat in Red Dwarf). I would love to see Codex, sounds right up my street!

Even above Doctor Who, I am a complete history/archeology nerd. And Tony and his team have such passion for what they do. That’s the buzz, the vibe of it all:) Knowledge and passion. Who could ask for more?

Do not seek to have events happen…

October 12th, 2007 by timelady

…as you want them to, but instead want them to happen as they do happen, and your life will go well.

Some daily events in Insanity Hall.

Saw Stardust. As magic as the book. Neil Gaiman rocks extremely lots:) The gang of teen girls agreed.

Finally got yet another (my fourth!! - I keep lending it out..) copy of my favourite ever book, Illusions. Anyone wants to understand me/my life philosophy, well, its a good start, (but no guarantees though, *I* don’t, why should you?;)  )

Joined Facebook, thanks to HRH eldest daughter, (in this case, known as ‘ok, alright already, i will do it’!). And already, I have to say : is THIS what the fuss is about? I mean, it is pleasant and all, but when the novelty wears off, it will be like Jaiku or Twitter or one of the myriad other social networking sites i belong to. Not really visited, i suspect. We will see:)

The media. It sounds like…

October 11th, 2007 by timelady

…a convention of spiritualists.

Finally got round to setting up my streaming media server, to play movies and video on any one of our computers over the network. The 500GB external HDD is hooked up to Tardis, the server, and happily churns out my excellent media, and the kids appalling crap ( ;)  )  on demand. All via a lovely web interface, that allows us to setup individual playlists etc. And ridiculously easy to setup, to!

This paragon is GNUMP3D.

A nice Ubuntu flavoured howto had pretty pictures and everything, which often helps:)
A minor fix was required to let the movies list and play:
line 2555 in /usr/bin/gnump3d is -

next if ( not $FILE_TYPES->isMovie( $file ) );

after it, add the next two lines  -

                # Strip directories for movies aswell
$file =~ s/^$ROOT\/(.*\/)*//;

all works thereafter:)

There are worlds…

…beyond our own - the compass will show the way.

The full trailer for The Golden Compass is out - and I can’t wait for the movie!!

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning…

…and the sea is asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, Ace; we’ve got work to do!

One for me!!!!! A totally brilliant comic, and finally, understanding of my world;)

Music is…

April 12th, 2007 by timelady

…what feelings sound like.

I got tagged, thanks to Bruce, so here is my Rage entry thang. No order particularly, and I had to not put in much of my beloved music. Whats going to annoy me is the ones I have forgotten, and will think about during the day.

Kasey Chambers - Pony
The Whitlams - No Aphrodisiac
The Church - Under The Milky Way
XTC - Dear God
Tatu - 30 Minutes
Suzanne Vega - Tom’s Diner
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Radiohead - Karma Police
Sarah McLachlan - In the Arms of the Angels
Weird Al Yankovich - Smells Like Nirvana
OMD - Joan of Arc (or Enola Gay)
Icehouse - Don’t Believe Anymore
Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven
Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl
Vast - Touched
Peter Gabriel & kate Bush - Don’t Give Up
Shakespear’s Sister - Stay
Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
Thomson Twins - Hold Me Now
Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
Neil & Tim Finn - Won’t Give In
Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly
Some Reasons:

The easiest film clip choice is the Johnny Cash one. Its so painful, its exposure of his thoughts of his life journey. Trent Raznor was right, Cash now owns that song.

In the Arms of the Angels was what I would sing softly to my youngest child, when he spent two weeks in NICU after birth. The nurses and my friends were our angels.

The Nirvana cover by Weird Al is enjoyed by our whole fmily though Amish Paradise was a close second;) But I can’t hear the original without SEEING Weird Al’s clip.

Karma Police has a great animated clip - great for those late night views;)

Neil And Tim Finn in the clip for this song, look so at home with each other, and like they are enjoying the process so much, that I chose this out of their whole (joint/solo) catalogue for that alone:)

I tag Shaun and Katie.

I fear the words “I have a cunning plan”…

“English actor ROWAN ATKINSON wants to revive his favourite character BLACKADDER”

Oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please…….

Ignorance is the night of the mind…

March 16th, 2007 by timelady

…a night without moon or star.

An interesting study shows that Americans, who are the MOST religious country in the developed world, are woefully ignorant about the Christian religion (and, I would bet, about other religions….).

Some of my personal favourite highlights:

  • 10% believe Joan of Arc was the wife of Noah from the Book of Genesis.
  • 75% of adults believe the famed Benjamin Franklin saying “God helps those who help themselves” is one of the Ten Commandments.
  • 50% of high school seniors believe Sodom and Gomorrah were married.
  • Only one in three Americans can name the four Gospels, while less than half can even name one of them. (Here’s a hint guys - John, Paul, George, and Ringo is wrong).

And for further fun, my much loved Cosmos, by Carl Sagan, done for Rednecks, courtesy of Family Guy.*

(*Its in Quicktime, which, yes, works nicely on Linux;) )
