…I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
How I wish he’d go away.
The Dragon In My Garage is an essay by Carl Sagan about the nature of faith and belief versus actual evidence - and demonstrates why we atheists find the whole ‘trust me, there is a god, have faith’ routine just doesn’t work.
Your belief/faith is your own, I just see no reason to believe in your dragon, ok?
…because if there be one, He must approve the homage of Reason rather than that of blindfolded Fear.

…to come unto me.
Christian pediatrician denies child service because parents are tattooed.
Yep, he turned away a little toddler, a little girl, crying in pain with an ear infection, because the parents didn’t meet his dress standards. That he based on his Bible.
So, for all you folks who proclaim that Christians are more moral than atheists - I give you our poster boy for Christian moral standards. What a guy.
…fools talk because they have to say something.
Here is a Creationist talking about Creation being taught in schools
Here is a scientist rebutting the foolishness of Creationists : Science, Pseudoscience, and Irrationalism
Pick the fool.
…the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.
There is a man who seems capable of far more than TWO contradictory beliefs simulataneously. He can hold however many are required to get what he wants. This man wishes to be the next US president.
John McCain To Deliver Keynote Speech For Creationists
Anyone else behaving like this gets called a whore.
…unless he purposely shut the eyes of his mind & keep them shut by force.
Isaac Asimov has summed up my position so well. “I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I’ve been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say that one is an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn’t have. Somehow it was better to say one was a humanist or agnostic. I don’t have the evidence to prove that God doesn’t exist, but I so strongly suspect that he doesn’t that I don’t want to waste my time.”
I am an atheist, and thats it. I always have been, just was uncertain about saying it. Agnostic or atheist? Which to be? Last night, reading the amazing ‘The God Delusion‘, by Richard Dawkins, he summed up the positions of atheism vs theism, and I realised, with a huge feeling of liberation, that I am clearly and thoroughly atheist. A cheerful 6.
On that declaration and explanation, here are a few ‘themed’ links.
I was pretty peeved when I read this blogpost - on The Hubris of Atheism. However, I knew I could not demolish what was, at best, prima facie drivel, so I simply sent it on to one of my favourite critical thinkers. Here is his response. Vapid And Dishonest: The “Hubris” of Atheism « The Thinker’s Podium
Flocks of the Christian faithful in the US will this Sunday hold special services celebrating Charles Darwins theory of evolution. The idea is to stand up to creationism, which claims the biblical account of creation is literally true, and which is increasingly being promoted under the guise of “intelligent design”.
A comic I am enjoying : Atheist Eve
…all was darkness.
One of my most beloved, all time favourite, short stories ever, by one of the best authors of the last century.
I readthis one whenI was, oh, about 10, and it resonated so strongly with me….
…direct arguments against christianity and theism produce hardly any effect on the public; and freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men’s minds which follows from the advance of science.
Over at Pharyngula, he has discovered on the Internet (ahh, the Tubes of Wisdom),what the REAL cause of tsunamis is.
Here’s something else you can blame the atheists for.
No illumination here folks. Its the armies of the night marching, right, right, right. (Obviously never left!).
…endeavors to silence by persecution, in old days by fire and sword, in modern days by the tongue.
Godless bigots beyond belief , according to a blogpost in one of the online Australian newspapers. Atheists are supposedly launching a ‘jihad’ (funny, as that is inferring a holy war) against religion. This author spews venom against us godless types forcing religious people to endure our point of view. For daring to suggest the Bible holds much that is cruel and just plain wrong. That the God of religions is often cruel and vengeful. He accuses atheists of forgetting cruelty by Stalin, Hitler, and Mao, noted atheists, as proving we are also bad. Accusing of us of bigotry actually is an attempt to silence, by taking some sort of spurious moral high ground.
Well, heres a couple of points.
And there are extremes of atheism, sure, who are vehemently anti religious. What, its like religion DOESN’T have extremists? Puhlease. The overwhelming majority of atheists and agnostics aren’t anti religion. We, for I am one of those types, just are sick of religion dictating elements of our lives. For trying to force science to recant (evolution, anyone?). For trying to force THEIR pov on our children, in education (’intelligent design, anyone? banning subversive books like Harry Potter, because if witchcraft, which is against their beliefs?), in our daily lives (oh, the protests over Life of Brian, and films like The Last Temptation of Christ). Heaven forfend (hehehe, heaven) that we should decide for ourselves what to think, read, see. Our health, especially women’s health, (abortion is always popular). Our rights - women’s rights in many very religious groups, communities, and even whole countries, are completely trampled.
See, heres the thing. Atheists are actually happy to agree to disagree, as long as religious types just go and do their thing without expecting, demanding, forcing us to do the same as them. Enlightened communities evolve (oo, that bad word!) beyond that religious dependency .
Screaming that Australia was founded on JudeoChristian principles
1)ignores the Aboriginal beliefs that were here over 40000 years before the British et al arrived, and
2)assumes nothing has changes since that occured over 200 years ago. What we were is not equal to what we are.
So, in answer to that blog, your intolerance is noted. You are guilty of just what you accuse atheists of being. Singling out extremists provides an easy target. It does NOT address any of the issues, or acknowledge our right to want to live our lives without your beliefs being part of them. A society of mutual respect is what we are after. Freedom to pursue belief or lack of them. If you want religious educaton, have it just not in state run schools. Religion does NOT belong as the generic option. You can hear Christian outrage when the Muslim community is perceived as pushing their beliefs onto our ‘Aussie way of life’ . Muslims howl equally at Western(Judeo Christian) influences. We athesists just want none. No religion guiding society. (Thats not communism or socialism, those too are almost religious beliefs, and are generally enforced by force). We just want a free, fair, democratic society, where religion is a personal thing, not societal.
Why does that thought make religious types so damned nervous?
The only bigotry here is the clanging sound of closed minds reverberating. Thats not about atheism or even about religion. Its abput inposing your beliefes on others. Atheists don’t have beliefs o force on otehrs. We work on science, which isnt our god, or worshipped. Ideas come and go in sceince, and proof, fact, and evidence either supports a theory or not. Faith has no place. We have our own code of ethics and morality, which is generally based on the principles of doing anything for the sake of it, such as charity, not because of brownie points from a religion. We do wrong because we fail at society’s rules. What, the prisons are only full of the naughty atheists now? Tsk tsk.
In short, another example of religious paranoia, masked by the attack on our supposed ‘bigotry’. No points. New player please.
