…but it is the first step towards curiosity, interest, study, understanding, appreciating and finally valuing diversity. If we can get everyone on the first step of tolerance, at least we won’t be killing each other.
What happens when Christians fight for the right to put religious flyers in school kids’ bags? Well, a Pagan group puts flyers in, inviting the community to a friendly information evening. The Christians will be fine with this demonstration of equality and fairness, yes?
Hehehe, anyone surprised by the big fat NO?
…and yet not too good to be true.
Rare anti-female circumcision conference held
Including conservative Egyptian and other conservative relatively hardline Muslim scholars. Isn’t it great to see religion working for advancement and rights, instead of the usual oppressive or violence clash stories? Lets hope they can progress elimination of this appallingly cruel and awful practice.
And while we are seeing some advances - a sigh of finally! After decades of opposition, Vatican view on condoms begins to shift.
Are we seeing reason and enlightenment finally start to haul some awful dark age practices and beliefs into the light of rationality and human rights? Lets all hope so!
…nobody gets out alive anyways.

…or is it just me?
From Feministing, the pure unadulterated creepiness that is The Purity Ball.
Listen as they tell the ‘heartwarming’ story of a ‘teenage girl, sitting on her father’s lap(????), deciding to remain abstinent until marriage, because daddy will give her all she needs (more ????). Fathers and daughters at the ball sign pledges. They are so weird and creepy, it is almost satirical.
Sadly, only almost.
…when they aren’t, destroying the law may be the first step toward changing it.
A Saudi woman is sentenced to ninety lashes with a whip for being in a car with a family friend - when they were kidnapped, and she was gang raped. The court doesn’t dispute the rape took place.
Her family will appeal - the leniency of the rapists’ sentence.
Saudi justice? Is this what Sharia law is? I am sorry, I want to believe better things of Islam, but this stuff, its just is awful. Fundamentalist religious law is always anti woman, always pro male. Doesnt matter whether Christian or Muslim. Religion should have no part in law, because religion seems to have NO concept of justice.
…the ideas disappear and out comes label-worship and label-bashing, and instead of living by a theme of ideas, people begin dying for labels… and the last thing the world needs is another religion.
The ones we have do enough harm, quite frankly.
So, we all know that America is hugely religious. Most people there believe in God, after all.
Or do they?
Interesting if its accurate. The Religious Right is revealed, more than ever, behind the curtain ike the WIzard of Oz, full of sound and fury, signifying - nothing. A madman’s tale, indeed.
…oppressed group in our society that lives in intimate association with their oppressors.
Some Feministing posts of interest (and outrage fermentation).
We can’t change our mind during sex anymore. Our bodies cease to be our own during sex.
South Dakota wants to ban all abortions. The bill is worded so that D&Cs, the procedure used in abortions, would be banned. however, this procedure is often also needed for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages that are incomplete, and for other gynaecological complications. Ones that can be life threatening.
I have needed them. My children would be orphans without them.
Oh, theres exceptions. When you read what they are, I hope you are sickened as I was by the graphic nature of what they regard as acceptable. The description is frightening - almost pornographic, and one wonders what the mindset behind it is?
Pro lifers huh? A scant bunch of microscopic cells that may develop into a fetus is more important to these people than any other life.
To South Dakota prolifers who are pushing for this bill, you suck. Bigtime.
Actually, pro lifers everywhere? Please consider that addressed to you, too. Stop your cruel protesting outside abortion clinics, and feed the homeless, foster some kids, sponsor decent contraception programs, and help the poor. Then you will stop being major boils on the buttocks of humanity, and actually be worthy of the term ‘pro life’.
…a monumental chapter in the history of human egotism.
Some Sunday atheism news - Atheist groups are on the rise
In the US of A, atheists are increasingly mobilising in revolt at the increase of the onward onslaught of the religious right, who scream for more ‘god’ (only THEIR god, of course) in schools and society. Same is developing in Australia, and seemingly world wide. All, of course, whether the rest of us want it or not. Any religion with fundamentalists. Its not just fervent christians, its muslims as well.
One voice yelling loudly about this dangerous trend is Richard Dawkins : Pharyngula: Dawkins and the religion bug-a-boo. (I am green with envy and more about this picture with Dawkin’s, to my mind, utterly wonderful wife.)
Come on people, its bleeding obvious! I am allowed a little namesake hero worship you know!
A followup to this post on Jesus Camp is an interesting tale of Growing up in Jesus Camp » The Allen Almanac
…finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.
Of course, what is more natural when dealing with the repercussions from a Republican predator of underaged boys, than to blame homosexuals for it?
Say it with me folks. Pedophelia/paedophilia, or (as in this case), ephebophilia are some severe sicknesses of the mind, and in no way homosexuality. Lets try to use small words for any conservatives out there.
Attraction to members of the same gender, is different to attraction to underage youths or children.
The first is between consenting adults, and is just as much a part of life, and as normal/natural as heterosexuality.
The second is wrong, and can be downright evil, and is in any way, shape, or form, unsupportable.
Its pretty simple, even for feral right wing ignorant blathering fools. Or so I would have thought. The Coming Gay Republican Purge says I am wrong.
…do not know what religion is.
Or politics either, really.
How the Christian Right has been thoroughly and utterly manipulated by Bush and his cohorts. But the story has been told now, by an insider, disillusioned, (but one suspects much wiser!), by what he has seen.
